Here's my latest resin creation, the Block 1 version of the Space Launch System. The kit is based on the Block 1 SLS-1000X configuration from the 'Space launch System Program Launch Vehicle Specification' document issued by NASA 26th Jan 2012, and uses a stretched version of the Shuttle External Tank as its core stage, with four RS-25 SSME engines and two 5-segment boosters. I've painted it in the black/white scheme shown in the NASA publicity material, though I suspect that after the first couple of flights it will probably revert to the bare orange/brown insulation seen on the Shuttle tank.

The resin parts

A few pics next to my DIRECT Jupiter J-130 to show relative size ( the SLS is 650mm high )

I'm also building the Block 0 version, with a standard length tank core and 4-segment boosters - though it is unlikely that this version will ever be built by NASA.

Next on the workbench is the cancelled Constellation launchers, Ares 1, Ares V ( big ! ), and Ares IV ( Ares V with Ares 1 upper stage )

Cheers

Impressive. If only NASA could produce and build this stuff as quickly.

Any chance of a comparison between the SLS and a Saturn V?

Here you go Eric ( and a Saturn 1 too )

I reckon the Block 0 SLS will be about the same size as the J-130, while the later Block 2 SLS with a fullsize J-2X powered upper stage will be about the same size as the Saturn V.

Great comparison. The Saturn 1 looks tiny.

The Ares V I'm about to start work on will be even bigger than the Saturn V

Just to add some pics now I've finished the Block 0 version too.

Lineup of three DIRECT Jupiters ( J-130, J-246, and J-246 Heavy ), SLS Block 0, SLS Block 1, and a Saturn V and Saturn 1 to show relative size

Block 0 with the alternative standard length cargo payload shroud

And with the long shroud

Where do you get the underlying information on these new launchers from?

Primarily from documents published by NASA for the SLS ( e.g. 'Space Launch System Program Launch Vehicle Specification', document no. SLS-SPEC-032 ) and the various powerpoints & pdfs they publish to show their progress.
