Basically looking at getting into electric R/C but not really sure where to start.

What are the best sites to visit to buy a complete kit with radio reciever and controller etc and whatever else I would need

Apex models seem a good (ie. large internet presence) place to get kit from.

For general advice and lots of info, check out Oople.com

Do you know what class you want to do e.g. 1/10th off road, 1/8th nitro etc? Do you have a budget in mind? Are you wanting to race?

I assume you mean cars? smile

When I hear r/c I instantly think of flying things, but I know others differ and that the earthbound know not of gravity defying wonders laugh

I was thinking the same, and immediately thought of aircraft, but some of the replies are talking about cars, so who knows what the OP is actually asking about.

if you wanting to get into racing - find your local club(s), and see what there running. Ask around - someone might have something suitable for sale. Modelsport and Wheelspinmodels are two good online retailers that I use regularly

I got one of these:
http://www.modelsport.co.uk/kyosho-ultima-sc-truck...

It's two wheel drive, so simple and good for doughnuts, super strong and great for sending off homemade ramps on the drive.

Depends what you want to do.

If you like mechanical things, and the attraction is about finkering, tweaking, cleaning and fixing, I'd go Nitro.
About 80% of the total time spent with a nitro car will be the above and 20% run time. Nitros also have the noise and smoke, which i find appealing, although others may not.

If you want something clean and reliable then go electric.

From personal experience i find Nitro's are nicer to drive. The acceleration is nice and gradual and it just feels more controllable.
Electric cars have stupidly fast acceleration and it can be tricky mastering throttle. They just have so much torque, you can't just give it the beans because it will just light up and spin.

Just spotted this while browsing some R/C websites:

http://www.apexmodels.com/gbu0-prodshow/LOSB0125B....

I don't know much about newer R/C stuff, I've not used any in the past 20 years or so! Would this be a reasonable car for a beginner with nitro R/C?
It looks like a pretty good price to me.

Modern brushless/Lipo powered electrics take away all the arguments for nitro

You may pay a little more with buying extra cells but you won't be constantly forking out for fuel

Had a look about and it looks like brushless/LiPo is the way to go for me. Just got to decide which one to go for now!
