I'll be there both days. Come say hi, I'll be on the Airfix stand. Doing a talk with some of my team about the development of Airfix kits at 2pm on Saturday in the lecture theatre
Make sure you're at the Airfix stand (in the corner of hall 3) at 10:30am on Sat ;-)
Will do.

I'll be there on Saturday. I'm not on a stand, but will pop by for a rest at Farnborough and the Harrier Sig. I've already pre-ordered most of my purchases, but am bound to spot something else that needs to be added to the already not insignicant loft insulation.
If you feel like a natter pop across to the Bham IPMS stand and see if Bill is in. 1E G4 (whatever the hell that means!)But rather like our Eric I get SMW-WANDERLUST too, what a show it promises to be. Matt I will try to get round to you too.
I think they should now rename themselves the IPMSL. For example, model of the show was a levitating Bugatti, and this wins best diorama:

Then there's this, which won Gold:

How can anyone go to so much trouble and get something so basic as how the engine fits on a Spitfire so very wrong?:

At least our own Perdu won a prize for his scratchbuilt Sherpa:

There were some superb dioramas. My favourites were the 1/48 Hurricane "mechanic training" scene complete with tiny manuals resting on the wings, and the capsized Vought kingfisher, very cleverly done with only the floats and a rowing boat visible from above, but underneath a whole underwater scene with sharks and divers. Loved it.

Is that seriously a model of a barrel?
A barrel?
Was it the only diorama or something?
It wasn't the only diorama, as Lufbramatt says, some of them were superb.A barrel?

I reckon it's time it switched to be a self-judging competition. I think some of the judging is lazy; there's so much quality on show that it's almost gives the impression that they can't be bothered to rate it all on merit, and just go for something 'different'.

Your new Typhoon looks nice, although it's too big for me. I had a good look at the 1:72 Lightning too. The gates on the small parts like the control column are much finer than on the Gladiator. Is this an ongoing improvement of moulding techniques, or is it to do with where the parts are made? There seems to have been a gradual improvement in quality with the new releases, but there are some blips which are confusing.fatboy69 said:
The Spitfire engine does seem to be sitting a little high even to someone like me who hasnt built a model kit of any description for over 15 years.
Or am i missing something blindingly obvious?
If you compare it with our own good dr_gn's splendid model from a couple of months back it looks like quite a poor effort.Or am i missing something blindingly obvious?

Fair play - they made an effort and won a competition, but the reflection on the judge who awarded it Gold is extremely poor IMO.
I wouldn't like to be too controversial but the Spitfire is absolute dross, in my eyes.
Yes the sit of the Merlin is bad but how can they put it in a competition with fogged windows and looking as if it had been dunked in a vat of old, well used 20W/50?
As for the oil drum, it looked very good. Must have been good, I took a photo of the thing. But best diorama? This shows the difficulties of judging other folk's work.
All of the judges are well respected modellers in their field. It happens that I knew two of them who judged a class, not the one I entered happily, both make models that leave me in awe so I trust their judgement.
But back to the diorama issue, I considered this a particularly fine dio and no less worthy of the accolades.

It tells a story as well as Oil Drum... But the dio classes always throw up something unusual.
As for the Overall Winner, stupendous modelling of the machine, less good of his signature "bird in the works" lassie.
And how can they tell if its right, in this I am entirely with doc.
Wouldn't stop me entering again some year, but unless my name ends with "oppski" "askodos" or some other name hailing from other shores I doubt I will be good enough.
Overseas winners names read out at the award giving proved that Telford truly is an International Modellers Society event.
Oh yes, I had the privilege of seeing this On The Flesh.
Blurry picture, couldn't keep my trembling hands still for long enough, sorry.

Stunning...
fabulous work Doc
