Eh up.

A couple of years ago, I spotted this Tamiya model - it's a rock-crawler on the cr-01 chassis, and the body is a Jeep Wrangler YJ. It was love at first sight cloud9

At the time though, I was way too skint to buy one at 400-odd quid.

Then a little while later I was going to pull the pin and buy one, but I could only find them available on ebay from a seller in Hong Kong - they didn't seem available in UK shops. Then a big bill arrived and that idea had to go out of the window.

I have recently had a clear-out on ebay and raised a bit of dosh, and decided that NOW I would buy one. The beauty of this particular model is that it looks identical to my real-life, modified Jeep YJ running on 35 inch wheels biggrin

However, after a bit of Googling it seems that they are now not available anywhere, at all. I assume that Tamiya have discontinued the model - I wonder why? Anyone know?

And does anyone know where I might now get one from? I curse my luck at not getting one while I could rolleyes

Any help appreciated, thanks guys! biggrin

Tamiya have a habit of discontinuing and then re-releasing the same item - that jeep body originally came out on the CC01 chassis and it's been re-released 3 or 4 times since.

The CR01 is capable, but doesn't represent great value in the grand scheme of things. With the likes of Axial you can get up and running and be more capable for a lot less money.

Tamiya will always rule the scale bodies though IMO. Check out Scalerc.co.uk which is a uk-based forum for scale crawlers etc.

Great, thanks for the reply.

Will head over to Scalerc pronto!

Tell me, I've never heard of 'Axial' - is that something you have experience of?

It's been a while since I dabbled in the rock crawlers, (my Junfac Tracer/Tamiya TLT)but Axial was the first to product a competition spec rock crawler. The only problem is they look more like robots than trucks. Fine for competitions, but not a lot of fun to look at.

What the Tamiya crawlers have lacked in outright crawling ability, they make up for in appearance. They have been making detailed ABS shells since the 80s, and there's very little to match them in their price range.

At the time though they didn't make an LR Defender body, so I sourced one from Kamtec instead.

Axial is a whole other brand of rc car - nothing I can draw any direct experience on I'm afraid. They seem to be very popular among the crawler community though so they must be half decent!

I like my CC01 truck, so much so that I used to have two of them. Lots of parts available to tune it up if you desire, but plenty of fun right out of the box.

The CC01 tries to satisfy a couple of different markets and for that reason it's a bit quick for proper 'crawling' so a common addition is a slower - albeit 'torquier' - motor.

The best Axial chassis for what you want is probably the SCX10, which is more of a scale type than a rock crawler
Example with a Jeep body (wrong Jeep I know) here
Then just find a body you like that fits, and possibly change the wheel to a better match as well.
