Can anyone help identify these please.

I remember back in the early/mid 90's having some model cars.
I think they were far eastern, possibly Tamiya (the boxes and instructions were written in japanese characters) and they were bought from the local model shop. I think they were only a couple of quid, not expensive thats for sure.
They looked like scaled down versions of the RC cars Tamiya were producing at the time.
They were about 5 or 6 inches long, came as a clip together kit (very simple) and had a small motor and gear sets with them. You built them all up and they ran on either an AA or AAA battery.
I can't remember if they had steering but basically you switched them on, popped them down on the carpet and they would fly over to the other side of the room and smash into the skirting board, or make them jump over your school books etc, hours of fun.
I can remember you could swap the gears and play about with them to adjust the speeds.
Not sure what made me suddenly think about them but now it's annoying me so I had a look on Ebay the other day but can't find them and cannot remember if they had a name I could search for.
Anyone on here got any ideas or had any of these. Are they still made? I doubt it but you never know. I haven't seen them since and am just curious.
Cheers guys.
