My Dad's in hospital with a clot on the lung... frown, But should be out by the end of the week smile.

He's late 60s, plenty of get up and go, loves the garden, sailing, out and about, and just finished building a garden bench, however, although not house bound, he'll be on 'light duties' for a few weeks at least.

Can anyone suggest anything model (or other) wise that I can get him as a bit of a distraction? I'm trying to avoid anything that makes too much dust, paint glue etc for both his lungs and so my Mum will let him do it in the house!

Technical Lego has crossed my mind, but was thinking something a bit more classic that he could appreciate once it has been made?

Any thoughts much appreciated.

I would think that most kinds of modelling will be out of the question because of solvents? Ask your GP before you give him an Airfix kit that he can't glue together!

How about Meccano? No painting or glueing and some challenging "kits"

I got my Dad a Mamod Traction Engine for his 60th a few years back.

took a few days to put together and he very much enjoyed it. Dont think there was anything too toxic in it, and no longer runs on meths, as the ones from his childhood did, so comparatively much safer.

Cheers guys, mecanno had crossed my mind, I didn't realise they did technical kits and those mamod kits look beautiful. I'll have a proper look when I am on the pc rather than the phone tomorrow.

How about Nanoblocks? They are smaller and more intricate than Lego and they do some nice looking sets of iconic landmarks and sites. I've got one the Eiffel Tower one somewhere that I might get round to doing one day... Few on ebay if you search 'nanoblock sites to see'

Old school balsa model spitfire. His eyes lit up as he is feeling like a caged oap gardener... at the moment.
