Having some trouble with the steering on a Tamiya CC01 chassis - after working perfectly for the first hour of use after construction, the steering has stopped self centring (sometimes but not always) and on occasion suddenly veers off randomly (even when close to the transmitter). A fresh battery pack seems to make no difference.

In an attempt to cure the self centring issue, I've disassembled the steering mechanism back to the servo, and re-assembled it, and can see no obvious issue - the only thing I can think is that I might need to upgrade the servo (it's a basic one bundled with the kit) as too much might be being asked of it with this large tyred model.

Any thoughts?

Does sound like a servo issue to me. The steering on all tamiyas are not overly complicated so doubt that could go very wrong.

Have you checked the servo saver is still ok?

It's very easy to damage a servo even when using a servo saver.

Just operate the servo without any load and see if it centres ok. Often when the gears are damaged you can hear and see it twitching.

First thing most people do is upgrade servos on RC kit as they're typically underpowered for the job and come with plastic over steel or Ti gears. Have a look at asiatees.com if you want a good servo for a good price. You can pick up a fast, metal geared, fully digital servo for £20-30.

Hobbyking are even cheaper for decent servos, but make sure to select the UK warehouse or the shipping costs become a bit uneconomical.

Standard servos would be fine for an on-road touring car chassis but for a CC01 you'll need something meatier.

The steering on a CC01 is pants anyway, regardless of the servo. It's the little bent up steering bar which has way too much slop in it. GPM do a hopup aluminium steering set which is better, but not wonderful. If you reverse a CC01 at speed it should do a strange kind of shimmy action!
