I bought a Tamiya Mad Bull from a pal for my son. It's pretty much mint. We put ball bearings in it and some aftermarket dampers. Runs great on a 5000 NiMH battery (bout 35 mins).

It's got a 3 step MSC which is terrible - I'd forgotten how poor they are. Can anyone recommend a decent, cheap ESC for this car? Thanks.

Plenty of choice - the first one on the list, the Sniper RV-20 Auto, runs my old Manta Ray nicely these days.

Looks spot-on, thanks.

Is it easy to set-up/reset?

How does the brake differ from an ESC? presumably it holds the motor rather than reversing it?

The TAMIYA TEU 101 ESC came in a lot of kit packages for ages, though I think it's been superceded by a combo brushed/brushles controller nowadays (TEU 105)

Worth looking amazon or ebay for unused secondhand examples, as a lot of these were ditched for more powerful units.

This was recommened for Tamiya kits with Brushed motors for a couple of rc forums:

Seem to work well, are water proof, lipo compatable and cheap smile

EDIT: 2nd in the above link too.

So I fittted the RV-20, and it worked on auto setup i.e. forward/reverse. A few issues though:

1) No wheelspin with the trottle rapidly moved to full, just fairly rapid acceleration.

2) Pushing the stick fully forward while reversing does produce wheelspin.

3) Very little braking effect: Pulling back on the throttle stick while moving forwards doesn't lock or spin the wheels in reverse, just a gradual slowing with no modulation.

Is the above right?

Thanks.

Thanks to this year's extra-crappy weather, my RC haven't seen the light for a looooong while now frown
IIRC the brake/reverse thing requires sort of a double-tap on the stick; it does take a second for reverse to kick in though. The whole thing is a ~bit~ more sedate than the old MSC, but it does keep running without taking the car apart to adjust it every 3 minutes!

Thanks, I tried it again last night. I think it might be 'different' rather than faulty. The braking action while moving forwards isn't particularly positive, while in reverse, it's much better. I initially thought it was working the wrong way around, but the acceleration in reverse is very low.
