I bought a set that came with the elink as my first try of dcc. I now wish I had bought a set with a select or elite controller instead.
Nothing wrong with elink itself. The hardware is solid and the software, whilst dated and a little cumbersome, does what it's supposed to do. My problem is that because I don't have a permanent layout, I find I just use my old dc stuff if I want to just play trains, and the few dcc bits I have never get used because I can't be bothered setting all the pc up to use it.
I would inly recommend an elink if you have a permanent layout.
My only other recommendation is to not register the software until you are 100% sure you want go keep it. You can install a 90 day trial iirc which has limited use but still gives you access to just about everything. One you register the software, it can never be deregistered from you, effectively making it worthless and unsaleable. You can deactivate the key to install on another pc etc but there is no way to have multiple installs with the same key and when you register the key, you use personal details which have to be used every time you reactivate the software on a new pc, so unless you want to sell all your personal details along with the software, it's effectively worthless if you want to sell it on as it can't be used. The elink can be reused but they only sell for about £30 used.
