As it says.

It's hard, clear, and I'd like to try softening/removing it before I resort to abrasives...

Nail polish remover is apparently good for glue.

What is being held together by said glue? If it is plastic, nail polish remover (acetone) is a VERY bad idea!

Knowing what is glued together gives a pretty good idea as to which glue might have been used and therefore how to try to remove it.

It's the residue left after someone attempted (unsuccessfully) to glue a chromed badge to the interior plastic trim of a car.

The trim is painted, and there's a blob of the same stuff on a nearby switch.

Two part epoxy? Something like Araldite maybe?

If so I think you will have to try and carefully 'pick' it off.

If you're lucky it could be glue from a "Hot Glue Gun" you should be able to soften it with a hairdryer. If it's two part epoxy you can try this but you'll need a paint stripper type hot air gun, go carefully that you don't melt the trim (obviously) and also you should wear goggles and gloves as the fumes from hot epoxy are nasty irritants.
