Paint for metal

For Xmas I was bought a model steam engine kit of machined parts (not ready for the machining just yet!), but I've no idea what paint to use for it. I have some etch primer, in grey, but for the top coat/colour coat, what paint do people recommend? Will only need a small amount, as it's only a small model, and the cylinder is brass so the paint doesn't have to be heat proof as far as I can tell, it is simply the base of the model, the flywheel etc which need painting. That said, I don't want to spend £20 on a tiny teeny pot of paint if there is a £5 one which will do just as well!

Interested to hear too. I have primed a metal spring with tamiya spray primer (oxide red), which is advertised as for metal and plastic. I’m now painting with tamiya acrylics and seems to be going on ok.

Rattle can from pound shop / local car shop / DIY shop?

Failing that, a small tin of Humbrol (or whatever) enamel? A bit more robust than acrylic paint.

My thought too - Halfords have a huge range of colours. Much better and also cheaper than the offerings in craft shops IMHO.
