Mamod steam engines

Mate at school in the 70’s had one of these,and now finally fancy getting one for myself seeing as I’m nearly 60!
Any fans or owners here ?

Yup me too.. I occasionally drag it out and entertain the Grandkids with it, Got to be careful though as they tend to want to grab the boiler as its passing

I have two Mamods and one, umm, German one I think. I rescued them recently from my Dads, fixed the stationary engine (leaky boiler sight glass and knackered pistons), ran it twice then put them all in the loft. That was about 4 years ago. They are fun things though.

I had a stationary Mamod engine in the 60s and used it to power all sorts of (with hindsight, probably dangerous...) Meccano stuff that I made. I can vouch that if you run it on a Formica kitchen table, it will eventually cause a scorch mark.

My co-conspirator was my Grandad whose job title before retiring was 'Colliery Blacksmith'. He could make or fix absolutely anything made of wood, metal or bakelite (no plastic in them days!) These days he could be the star of the Repair Shop on BBC1.

Because of these early influences, I did, however, go on to do a mechanical engineering apprenticeship and degree and spend a large chunk of my later life in engineering (and fixing things - I've gone from 'Daddy fix' to 'Grandad fix' over the last forty years).

I think I had the Wilco(?) ones - like my RC aircraft I had to sell in order to fund going to uni : (

If memory served I had quite a few workshop items like the bench grinder etc.

I'll be flogging a couple of Mamod traction engines in the next few weeks. Meths fuelled (as they should be) from the '70s. Be interesting to see what they go for.

I had a stationary engine when I was a kid.
I can confirm if you spill the meths on your bedroom carpet, while overfilling the burner. Then light it, it does not make you too popular with your parents!

Wilesco, they're a bit better than Mamod, steam engines with proper valve gear rather than oscillating engines.

When I was a lad I had a traction engine and then saved up for the steam car, and a little factory which ran off a belt from the flywheel of the engine.

Thoroughly enjoyed them, very satisfying to fire up and run. No serious injuries.

They must be at my parents house somewhere.

I had a Mamod stationary engine as a kid and so when I saw this in our local charity shop window a few years ago I just had to buy it. I think I paid £40 for it without knowing whether it worked. Actually runs perfectly but currently needs a new drive belt.
