Airfix Widebody Corvette
Discussion
Here’s an old 1:24 scale Airfix reboxed kit of a 1970s Greenwood widebody Corvette. Designed by brothers John and Burt Greenwood and armed with a Chevy big block these cars could exceed 200mph. The kit is reasonably accurate in terms of its overall shape but has some obvious errors which are probably a combination of molding process limitations and wishful thinking on the part of the mold maker. Some I have been able to correct and others I can live with.
Originally sold by Eidai the kit was then supplied with a small battery operated motor and rudimentary steering. This is reflected in the toy-like quality of the underside and interior. Since absolute accuracy was not possible I opted for a generic representation taking cues from different surviving vehicles.
Out of the box.

Very basic underside. I’ll cut away unnecessary rear wheel arches and excess floor pan.

All vents opened up, incorrect panel lines filled, scale spoiler added, unnecessary body section below doors cut away, overscale details replaced.

Scratchbuilt interior. I haven’t gone overboard since most will be hidden from view.

Into primer.

Rattle can red and ceramic polish to add some shine. Suspension lowered and some lead shot added front and back to help the model sit down. Tyres should be slicks but you get what you get. Side pipes from aluminium tube.

I browsed scalemates for the origins of this kit and it looks like it's been produced a few times by various companies over the years. I assumed it was one of those early 80's kits that Airfix repopped, but it seems to have been released once in 1992 with an equivalent Heller boxing in the same year. Probably a relatively rare but unloved kit - I've certainly never seen one built before.
