Micro scalextric - batteries?

I've just bought a micro scalextric set from Ebay for my son. It works great and in really good condition, but i didn't realise it was a battery operated version. I see i can buy the mains power adaptor unit but i was just going to use rechargeable batteries... until... i read in the instruction manual it says that rechargeable batteries shouldn't be used.
Can anyone that may be more knowledgeable than me shine some light on why it says this?

It's most likely due to the high current draw, it probably dates back to older rechargable batteries that could be damaged if put under too much load that reduces their ability to be recharged.. With better battery tech you'll probably be ok but I would just get the wall adaptor if you have easy access to a plug.
