Not really a 'scale model', but anyone else like Meccano? I recently got around to sorting mine out. I built a cabinet from scrap wood from the pattern shop where I used to work, some old baize from a snooker table builder and bought some ball bearing runners and some decals. The boxes on top are old toy shop Meccano storage boxes.

Built this orrery years ago (Sun, inferior planets, Earth and moon), haven't got the heart to dismantle it.

Anyone else got any Meccano models to post? Fed up with looking at Duplo Lego at the moment.

Cheers,

love the orrery, is that a kit or did you design it yourself?

Cheers,

I have a book full of gear ratios for orreries (sp?), and photographs of what other people have built, so I based it on one of these, but slightly modded to incorporate the bits I had available.

It's great to watch! It even includes the inclination of the moons orbit around the earth (it moves up and down as well as around).

oh boy is that cool

a great set of cabinets and easily as scale models-ey as Lego IMO

The orrery is magnificent, can't blame you not dismantling it once it works

Thinking about it, if you did it might disturb the interplanetary perturbations so better leave it be...

Mind you, if we'd all left the models alone when we were kids no second or third models would have been made

Steam Roller anyone? I built a steam roller that stayed together nearly a week, but it was hard to leave it alone. Wish I'd had a Box Brownie back then, I'd love a few pictures

You could always build another! Meccano's still going srong if you know where to look.

You can even get meccano CAD now believe it or not:

www.virtualmec.com

Try out your plans before attempting to build (there is also Lego CAD).

Cheers.

No idea! all I can say is that I didn't have a problem...and the software is very impressive!

If you're in doubt, don't go there is my advice.

Cheers.

You are very organised there - nice to see it's proper metal Meccano though, I have a whole load of the stuff that I inherited from my Grandfather smile

The orrery is very impressive too! Especially the details like your moon orbit.

The best I ever managed was a full size dog model when I was younger.....it wasn't very detailed and involved Meccano, paper and paint, but I liked it and the dog barked and growled so it was good enough to fool him laugh
