I have finally managed to get the attic above the garage cleared of all the junk that has been shoved up there for the last 25 years.

So then what to do with this lovely clean space? A perfect blank canvass of chipboard and brick.

I did have the Scalextric set-up there but it didn't really work out. More of a temporary thing.

Anyway while searching I found two things, some Hornby train stuff I found and my limited Warhammer 40,000 collection.

Maybe a large gaming table for Warhammer and diorama table for my 1/35th tanks of perhaps a decent sized train set.

Looking at the Warhammer stuff again today in my local model shop it seems to have come down in price and also looks really good.

On the other hand trains are well TRAINS! They are expensive though? How much would I be looking at for a decent sized layout? 3m x 1m oval, sheds and sidings? 3-5 trains and some industrial trucks (I like diesel trains and coal/oil trucks).

ETA due to the hatch, roof slope and some stuff stored up there I won't have room for both, probably be able to get a 3-3.5m x 1-1.5m raised area set-up along one wall.

Train set, less embarasing than Warhammer besides Games workshop hate the older hobbyists as they know how much the prices have gone up in the last 20 years.

Model railway , get more enjoyment than Warhammer.

Get a few cheap Bachmann/Lima/Hornby loco's off ebay. If you want to model Diesel loco's , you have a choice between National/Private era.

There are lots of items out now from 00 Gauge layouts , but an N gauge layout will be space saving and will let you make the most of the room.

No offence (this isn't a dig at you) but I couldn't give a flying fk what anyone else thinks about me and my hobbies, why should I be embarrassed about what I enjoy.

It's actually the build that I'm most looking forward to. the main difference is that both will gave me a chance to build a landscape but Warhammer will allow more creativity and give me opportunity to build/paint the actual subjet as well.

Trains on the other hand will be more of a challenge to make the landscape look good/realistic and will give a nicer/more fun end result.

I actually think that Warhammer has got a little cheaper in the 10 years since I last played, the move from metal to plastic has dropped a set of Imperial gaurd from £15 to £12 since I last played.

Just done some measurements.

Realistic size is 2.4m x 1m maximum for a train set and 2.4m x 0.8m for a gaming table (reduced for reach issues).

Would this be big enough for a decent train set? Anyone have a rough idea of costs for the track? and enough signals scenery to look decent? (not including trains).

I have looked up the cost of things but this doesn't really help in terms of a guid price for a complete build as I don't really know what I'll need.

This does leave the Gaming table with the advantage as I will make everything myself for this.

Guess it depends on what scale you want to go with. OO, HO What era? modern, golden age, Actual or invented.
Have a search for model railway layouts for ideas. There are software packagaes for layout design, but I think I've read your a CAD designer so no probs there.

Cost wise- as big as your wallet really. I was looking into plastic loco kits a while back and but came across Bachmann locos
and they were really nice but not cheap
This is a business close to me.
Hattons

There are micro scale layouts too, so you could maybe split the space between trains and Warhammer.

Or you could turn it into a model workspace with display units.

Be good to see pics on what you come up with.

If you want low cost scenery , look into metcalfe kits for buildings , Knightwing for any lineside details and Cararama Hongwell 1:72 cars.

There's plenty of loco and rolling stock kits(pikey plastic ones and posh metal ones) out there, as well as kits for pretty much any type of building/scenery you can think of, so plenty of painty gluey stuff to be done with trains too. Building from kits also gives a wider choice of stuff over readymade gear and is often a lot cheaper and more realistic(your gluey painty skills depending).

Why does it need to be soundproof?? Gimp mask or ball gag should do fine.

T89 Callan - make the gaming table bigger, but build it in two sections so you can put it over the train set table? just an idea.. go for a really good build with hills and rivers.

A friend and I are building a warhammer army each, we meet once a month to paint, drink rum and smoke cigars... it's the most grown up i have felt for ages smile Actually the modelling aspect has tempted me to get back into some more 'traditional kits'

I know you said both was a problem on space, but what about a flip table.... Train set on one site, warhammer on the other and display cases to keep models/rolling stock in.........

That's what I would aim for to begin with - easier to build a flip table to start with than retro fit - and then pick the one you want to concentrate on, which I suppose brings you back to your original question.

At N guage go for both trainset round the battle field and Play epic scale assuming that's what they still call it, otherwise go for a similar military modelling war fare game, to combine the two. Epic was by far the best warhammer game.

with this size i would be looking at N gauge for trains

Todays update.

I have been working on a dual table idea, won't able to flip it though do to the slope of the roof, probably just make it dual layer with two different table tops that can be swapped.

I also went and had a chinwag with my local model shop owner and have a peruse.

I have to say that I'm leaning towards a gaming table as trains are just so expensive even N Guage prices for me are quite shocking (it would have to be N-Gauge for the size and I don't have any N gaue trains at all), whereas Warhammer stuff is quite cheap now, I picked up a set of Imperial guard with the loose change I had in my pocket just to see how much I enjoy painting them.

I think I may start with the gaming table, then when my skills are honed move onto the expensive stuff.

Decision was made tonight.

Went into the local hobbycraft to get some paint for a Sauber C9 kit and they had the Hornby City Industrial OO Set reduced from £120 to £60, so a bit of an impulse purchase but now I can get underway building my train set.

Probably going to try and make some kind of industrial truck yard with loads of cranes and factories, maybe even model it on the docklands <1mile from my house.

My purchse was also inspired slightly by the really nice little scaled car models Hornby now do for £3, got a little 'Ready Mixed Concrete' SI Land Rover to go with it as the first accessory.
