I'm looking for a model (plastic or die-cast) of a Piper PA28 aircraft that I can build or repaint to match the plane that I flew to qualify for my PPL. I cannot find anything in the UK and am at present waiting to hear from someone in the USA who might do 1:48 kits. Can anybody help?

Hi Mick - thanks for that but I'd seen one in the flesh today. It's too big and to expensive for the space avaailable and my wallet.

Found one - not exactly what I wanted, it's a Cherokee instead of a Warrior but it'll do. Here's the problem, my modelling skills are not too good (I've built hardly anything in 40 years) and I want it finished like this - http://cdn-www.airliners.net/aviation-photos/photo... How should I paint the stripes and the registration letters?

Airfix did a 1/72 Arrow which is in those 1970s Piper colours. It caries the reg G-BAAP.

Light aircraft are not very popular with kit manufacturers but the Cheokee family has been covered, albeit rather poorly -

Piper PA-28 Cherokee Tokyo-Marui 02
Piper PA-28 Cherokee 180C Aurora 281-70
Piper PA-28 Cherokee Arrow II Airfix 00060

The Marui kit is 1/36 scale and the Aurora is 1/72 (and VERY rare).

Have a search on e-bay. I'm sure you'll find one. Of all the PA-28 kits, it is probably the easiest one to source.

It's not in Airfix's current catalogue but it's not that rare. If I see one knocking about at my local model club or a model show, I might grab one for you.

the Arrow was a nice little kit

needed quite a bit of noseweight though

I glued mine to a "piece of tarmac" so it didnt become too heavy for its undercart, seemed better than a dollop of lead in all sorts of places

I'm sure mine came with mostly blue transfers

it was a long time ago though, so I could be wrong

It's only ever come with the Piper house colours of red and blue and the G-BAAP lettering.

I actually saw the real G-BAAP at a Biggin Hill Airshow in 1987. It was still in those colours.

I think the Airfix kit dates from around 1974 or 75.

The Aircraft in the kit was bought new in 1972 by my dad's mate frank syred a building contractor based in carshalton. He and my dad and I flew in it often. I was a young air cadet when airfix launched the kit and I pointed it out to frank who approached airfix for retrospective permission to copy his aircraft, they sent him a note and two dozen kits!. Frank sold the plane to his new girlfriend for a fiver to avoid it being a part of a divorce settlement in 1987. She sheltered it from the divorce and frank flew it into his late sixties with my dad as co-pilot (both had PPLs unitl the mid 90's). The aircraft was sold on in 1992 and was re-registered in France where it was in regular use until 2002 when it left the french register. I had my first flight in command after I got my own PPL in alpha papa, novel as it was a retractable. Frank sent me out with the instructions "For gods sake remember to lower the wheels before you turn finals!" I bounced a bit but that was the last time I flew her as I set off for a career in the north west of England. I miss the old bus, but she was out performed by the Robin 180 I flew (G-BAPX) despite the Robin having fixed gear a bigger cabin and 20 hp less. Despite this she has a soft spot in my memory.

Nice story.

I still have a rather battered built edition of the Airfix kit on my shelves. At the moment, the prices being asked by traders for the kit is a bit on the high side - otherwise I'd splash out and do it again.

Hi Foodhoover
It was nice to read your story, right up until you pointed out the deceitful owner. Pleased for you, sorry for the immediate family.
