I'm a little bored at the moment and fancy getting myself a new RC car to tinker with (at the moment I have a HPI Rush Evo II bought 2nd hand off Ebay) but would prefer to have one I can build up from scratch.

I recall reading somewhere that this isn't that feasible anymore since most kits come with most things pre-assembled. Is there anything I can look out for kit wise? Can you buy all the components seperately and build it up yourself (are there instructions anywhere how to do this?)

I love playing with Mecanno / Lego hence have a tinkering to play with a bigger version...

My Yokomo came as a kit and you could also order it with various levels of performance with extra parts in the kit etc etc.

You could also use the chassis to build a Touring Car, Buggy or Truck with different suspension and parts.

While almost every kit you can buy is also offered as a RTR (ready to run) there are still loads around you can build yourself.
What have you in mind? On road/offroad? Scale details and realism, or performance without the looks?

If I was buying a kit today to build I think I'd go for one of these:

That RSR is new and I think it's a beaut!

thanks for the replies.

To be honest, I have no idea what type to make - I thought the list of options was very small (although now I know a little more, it appears to be the opposite!).

I've been looking around at the clubs local to me and figured if I was wanting to play properly it'd be wise to get something that fits in scale / engine wise (no point going Nitro when they are all electric). Thing is, all the clubs meet on odd nights or are way too far away frown I might keep looking and pop along one night though!

I've already got a off-road stadium truck in the guise of the HPI Rush Evo, so figured something more on-road, especially since most of the clubs here race on-road electrics. Still, the place I'd most likely race it is undulating, puddled concrete so I'm not sure!

The one you've linked looks the bees-knees mind! I'm liking the Datsun 510!

Do HPI do a basic chassis version of the Sprint 2? They do a sport version with radio and drift versions, but what if I want to select my own radio, motor, body and ESC?

What are the alternative 1/10 electric touring cars?

Sorry for the slight thread hijack, it's still pretty much on topic. smile
