Hi all,

My internal notice board occasionally has fun stuff advertised for sale. This morning i have seen an advert for a ParkZone P51 Mustang.

Everything you need to fly in the box. Its a used model, so has some battle scars.
Needs propeller (£2) and front cowelling (not really needed only for cosmetics).

Asking price is £40.

Is this a good price? I haven't had a RC plane before, so would this be a good place to start?
Can these be flown anywhere? Parks etc?
What should i look out for? Batteries and power packs?

Any help is appreciated.

For £40 it sounds OK. You can get a new cowl for a couple of quid:

You'll need a large area to fly it, and if you're sensible, insurance too in case you hit someone/something. If you've never flown before, it would be wise to let someone with experience test fly it, and guide you through the basics.

I've never flown one, but It doesn't look like a trainer, so probably would be a bit more tricky to fly than a beginners model. Assuming it's not totally knackered, I'd have a go at it for £40, even if it was to keep for when I'd learned on something more suitable. Even if you total it, you've probably spent less than a trainer!

Cheers,

The batteries are tiny in these things- you can get spares for around a fiver, buy a couple and you can fly non stop as one will charge in the time it takes to drain one.
They are not a beginners model- far from it, but are light enough that one crash won't destroy it, so at that price have a go and see what you think.
Make sure you are very gentle with the controls- they don't need much movement until you get the hang of it. Choose a calm day, make sure you get some height on it before you do anything too daft.
Great hobby and a good little plane.
Have fun

Hi Ray,

I assume this is the Park Flyer size model and not the micro sized model?

Park flyer - http://www.parkzone.com/Products/Default.aspx?Prod...

Ultra Micro - http://www.parkzone.com/Search/Default.aspx?Search...

They are quite different models in price and flying ability. I suspect it is the park flyer version as these are quite common. The P51D is not the easiest plane to fly especially as a first timer. It's quite likely you'll crash and burn at the first attempt. Would still be a good buy at £40 but you should consider a trainer first to get used to flying - something like a HobbyZone Super Cub. Then you can move onto the Mustang when you are more confident.

Its the larger model. Massive wingspan.

It looks pretty beaten up, but could be great fun.

Worst case, can the Tx and Rx be used in somthing else?

Sorry, I had assumed it was the small one!

The model you are looking at is great- I had one a few years ago and still have the spitfire and the FW190 from the same range.

By no means a beginners model though, but spares are available and you could use the gear in another model although it's 3 channel.

If it's a hobby you want to get into, look at www.flyingwings.co.uk- they have loads of stuff made from a bouncy foam called epp- I make my own from this stuff as it's cheap and really easy to repair.
