As someone recently started out with rc aircraft, ARTF at this stage, I wondered if some knowledgable person could define the abbreviations used?

Li-Po
NiMh/NiCd
Brushless Esc
2.4Ghz - why is that the preferred transmitter/reciever?
Binding - how is this achieved?
EDF
EPO

I'm sure there is lots more.. Just be nice to know. smile

Li-Po Lithium polymer batteries, probably the best value option, given high capacity/power (discharge current) to weight ratio, though they can be sensitive, make sure you follow guidelines, use proper charger, don't discharge past 3v per cell or they sulk, and die. Better than the old tech known as ...
NiMh/NiCd ... Nickel metal hydride, ok, but heavier, lower discharge current (less amps at a given voltage = less power), still vulnerable to being poorly looked after, but easier than lipo/ Nickel Cadmium, is 70s rechargeable tech, pretty tough, but not able to compete with the other two
Brushless Esc - Two types of motors- brushed and brushless (look it up for for full explanation), what you need to know is that brushless is more effiecient due to there not being a brushed contact, and hence lower friction, less heat, higher RPMs longer run times. Require a special Electronic Speed Controller (ESC) to power motor (has 3 wires which are "pulsed" in a specificorder to make it turn, whereas a normal motor has a positive and a negative wire, and a speed control only need control the current basically)
2.4Ghz - why is that the preferred transmitter/reciever? basically no interference, ~100 channels
Binding - how is this achieved? this is just telling you transmitter and receiver to talk to each other, So they know they are linked, so when you switch them on, they automatically sync (and pick a free frequency)
EDF electric ducted fan - what it says on the tin, like and electric jet engine
EPO is a type of foam http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2...

That's great, thanks.. Been buying RCM&E magazine recently and while they use lots of abbreviations nowhere did I find there meanings or explanations.. Much better. smile
