Am I right in thinking the latest gen have dropped the wetbelt in favour of a chain?

To my knowledge it's still a wet belt, but if they have indeed swapped to a chain I wouldn't think that it's a good thing.

Most new chain driven engines have, or have had issues with chain wear and stretch, tensioners failing, guides failing (looking at you VW and BMW). So the chain is still a consumable, but a more expensive one. I'd take a belt engine over a chain engine any day of the week.

The new Hybrid versions are chain driven but the non hybrids still have a wet belt. The latest version of the belt has reduced problems significantly but it is critical that the correct specification oil is designed and that it is changed at the intervals stated by the manufacturers.

To dispel a myth regarding this engine, the wet belt must be changed regardless of mileage!

Garage yesterday had a 2018 Peugeot 2008 with only 21,000 miles; the belt was on its last legs.

Mileage does not make any difference in terms of the belt durability

There exists a timing chain conversion for the belt-driven engines now.

No idea of cost.

They are really nice engines to drive, so if you solved the massive problem with them you’ve got a decent reliable motor.

I’m an old school Peugeot Specialist, long retired.
I just can’t get my head round a cam belt running in oil. The 1.2 “Purecrap” engine has been a disaster costing Peugeot millions. If you have one get the belt replaced, AND, have the sump removed, cleaned together with the oil pick up filter.
The chain driven engines are just as bad, so many issues.
I think it’s sad, Peugeot used to build very good engines that lasted for ever. All I can say is don’t consider any of them.

I have a Mokka three cylinder 1.2 turbo auto with a wet belt engine, had it from new, just had second main dealer service done on 17,000 mls.

Have read the wet belt horror stories, but fingers crossed, so far it's been a lovely engine, plenty enough power for normal use.

I would not touch another wet belt though.

Vauxhall say they will stand by them, provided service plans have been kept up.
