Maybe a bit to high insurance, but group 7. The Westy is group 4/5 will 2 groups make much of a difference for a .2 of a litre difference?

Don't forget that the groupings aren't just done on how quick a car is.

How likely cars are to be stolen/broken into also plays a big part in it.

True enough...I remember when my mum had one back in the day - steering lock and all!

I'm guessing 205s are easy to break into, as there is little to explain their high groupings otherwise

Even the 1.6 GTi is in the same group as a VTS ffs

They are, you can't get theft insurance on a 1.9 without a Thatcham immobiliser!

First of all, you can't really pinpoint a good insurance company, as they all have different aspects in a customer they're looking for.

As for the VTR...

Not a bad choice. Although dont go for a Phase 1.
Try to find an enthusiast with a Phase 2, who has looked after it. Most will be ragged.
They're cheap to insure, and quite nippy. I was considering one until I found a bargain Megane Coupe.

Exactly, I bought my first 406 coupe 3litre v6 at 20, it was a group 20 but cheaper to insure than my previous corsa 1.2 sx, mini cooper 1.3, and polo TD1.9 although over 10 groups higher.

Because it was at the time very exclusive and very very secure the insurance was a bargain.

I still have one (3rd) and insurance is cheaper than the fiesta 1.6 zetec I also own which is a sh*theap.

Shop around, you may be surprised by cars you never thought you could afford.

If you can insure it and the image doesn't put you off then yeah.

I'd disagree that ph1 cars are worse...they're far better. As Saxo's got on, more and more corners were cut to keep costs down. The earlier cars had superior interiors, less complicated electrics and IMO looked better in the right colour.

They're not quick, don't kid yourself they are. The engine is lacklustre and flat. The gearings way too tall too. But the handling and smile factor are good, not as high as a VTS by miles, but then not grp 14 insurance either! The Westys aren't much slower at all, only above 60mph do you actually notice the difference (except with very late 98bhp VTR's which feel quicker all round). But remember Westys and Furios have the narrower tracked drum rear axle and weak interiors.

I expect the insurance company would laugh though, I'd aim for a 106 XSi if they do....they're cheap to insure for some reason.

Or an AX GT if you want a perminant smile on your face as you drive, people might think you're gay though if you grin everywhere.....just a thought Timmo.
