Soot under bonnet of Cooper D

Wifes Cooper D is smelling of exhaust/soot on startup and there's lots of soot in the engine bay particularly around the turbo charger and the bonnet immediately above it. Goes OK, but is this a problem?

could be a leaking exhaust manifold gasket or cracked manifold?
