New Owner of an R53 Cooper S - Help Please
Discussion
I have just received a Cooper S (2004 54) as a graduation present and I have so many questions unanswered, was wandering if anyone could help...
The fuel consumption is so poor; it cost me £30.00 to drive from Northampton to Sheffield and then to Birmingham (3 hours of motorway driving at the most). Is there anyway I could temporarily disconnect or remove the supercharger in order to boost fuel economy?
What are your thoughts on eco-remapping? Are the stated gains in fuel economy (increase by 15% - 20%) realistic?
Thanks

Doesn't really sound too bad for an R53 to be honest (after some quick maths in my head which may be wrong). I think that's low-mid 30's mpg? Really not too shabby for the R53.
If you're after fuel economy, you may be better off getting another car. None of the things you mentioned are really options. You might get a slight improvement in mpg with a remap, but nothing major.
Enjoy the car though
Congrats on graduating as well.

Congrats on graduating as well. sounds like someone bought you the wrong car....... the cooper s is a great little performer, but it does like a drink; the newer version with the turbo is a little less thirsty but if economy is your want, then you'll need to sacrifice the performance and get a One or (and I'm not going to enjoy writing the next few words) a D.
As others have said, swap it for another car. I get 32mpg out of my daily commute, mostly motorways with some town driving. On a good run 180+miles of motorway I have had it has high as 41mpg but it was as boring as watching antiques roadshow. If you are looking for something economical you need a less thirsty car, none of the ECU remaps will get you much more than low 30's.
If you decide to keep the R53 you will learn to love the supercharger.
I've topped mine off with a Milltek exhaust system and between the two there is a fantastic soundtrack to my occasional blurts.

How often are you likely to be doing lots of miles in it? Or to put it another way, how many miles in a year do you estimate you'll be doing?
If it's less than 10k, I wouldn't worry too much about it, as what you gain in fuel economy will be lost in the purchase costs/depreciation of whatever else it is you'll buy.
As has been mentioned though, £30 for 3 hours of motorway driving (circa 200 miles?) is pretty good really, my diesel estate isn't any better than that.
Motoring is an expensive pass-time.

As others have said - it's performing fine. It's a great fun car and I love my S Works but the trip comp says 28mpg in mixed driving and that is to be expected for a supercharged car.
Think hard before selling if you really need the mpg (surely it isn't a graduation treat if it's a boring econowagon???) but don't modify it to defeat it's very purpose.

Really...?!I was getting 300mile from about a 60quid tank at 30ish mpg. Best I got driving at sub 70 on M'way was 43mpg. That was boring though.

Bang on the money for mine as well 43 mpg once but around the 30mpg mark every day driving.
Sell up and buy something with better MPG if it is to much for you to run. A fabia VRS or something????

I've bought a 3.0litre Z4 Roadster. Hoping it will give me better MPG than the MCS
It won't be as much fun to drive.

That's pretty damn good for an R53, they are thirsty.
you need to be reducing the pulley and putting a new exhaust on it, and then manifold and de-cat, that way you can average between 18/24 oh thats if you drive it properly lol
