My Mother in Law has a 04 Cooper S convertible.

The roof will not retract. The BMW dealers have told her it needs either new runners (c.£1,000 fitted plus VAT) or a complete new hood (c.£2,000 fitted plus VAT) depending on whether the hood is twisted or not. They have also said they won't know if it's just the runners until they fit new ones and see if that cures it. An Indy has quoted around £700 for new runners.

Anyone have any experience of this and knwo if what she's being told is true?

Thx

Bad luck
these hoods are a pain
I would say neither of these suggestions are necessarily correct
The frame is unlikely to twist unless the roof has suffered a malfunction previously
also I would think the runners are unlikely to get damaged ?

Most common problem occurs when the "sunroof" first stage operation goes tits up when one of the drive "cables" snap causing one side to go back without the other
If this has happened its fairly obvious and a pain to fix

Is the first stage motor (above your head in centre crossbar) actually working ?
Maybe as first check pull the plastic cover off the motor ( with careful prizing)
and use the manual overide in centre of motor (instruction on label) and see if the first stage unlatches from the screen and starts to move fairly easily - I would think this prove the runners are OK

wind it back to the fully closed position.

Is the small red light flashing on the up/down button
this could mean the micro switches in the boot are not "made" check the parcel shelf is sitting correctly and the locking latches are properly closed.
silly question - is the handbrake on

after that I'm not too sure but dont just take to dealer and spend a fortune on their say so

good luck

Thanks for the advice... I'll pass it on.
