Trouble filling up with deisel using a jerry can....

I tried to put some diesel in my wifes mini as she had it running on fumes!! But a little metal plates comes over the fuel filler nossle when i try to insert the pipe from the jerry can and won't let me put deisel in!! I need to get some in to get it to my nearest garage to fill up!!
Any help please.

That'll be a safety feature to stop you filling it with unleaded.
just drive it to a petrol station. There will be more fuel in there than you think. The gauges are very pessimistic. (unless the nearest garage is a long way away).

I managed to dribble some into the tank from the jery can and made it to the petrol station ok.

How much fuel did you put in at the filling station? Assuming you brimmed it you can tell how much fuel was left and from that you can get a good idea of when you really need to be at panic stations.
