Mirror adjuster cap broken off.....

I'm still loving my Mini, but need some help with a minor annoyance...!

When I bought the car the only 'issue' was that the little silver wing mirror adjuster cap was missing (i just have the stalk underneath) - everything works ok, and I can use the stalk which usually fits underneath the silver cap to adjust the mirrors fine, but it just looks a bit naf.

Apparently you can't buy just the cap, so I got a complete unit from a breakers and thought I woud try and pull the cap off (and refit it on my car) - but I can't pull it off, and I don't want to break it. So this morning I called Mini to see how they would charge, and all they can do it fot a whole new unit (including the heated seat controls etc). Which I have to buy from them. The total cost would come to about £180 - all for a bloody plastic silver cap!!

Any ideas on what else I can try? Should I try harder to pull the cap off the unit I have from the breakers? Try a screwdrived to flick it off maybe?

I would be very grateful for any thoughs - it's not exactly life and death stuff, but it's annoying me!!!!
