All the MINIs I've had or driven so far can display the speed in the tach above the steering column, regardless whether they have a trip computer. Good thing too, as the speedo could be 2 ft dia and still be effing useless due to its position...900T-R said:

Mines a 2003 R50 without trip computer and the digital readout only shows outside temp. It's not possible to show speed. I'd guess it's probably different on later cars.you need the central dial as its linked upto the ECU as in the R53 is the part that records the miles. The r56 is fairly much built in as it has all them buttons
Basically - live with it or buy one with a sat nav etc, you don't even notice it when driving.
If you do not have the speed read out on the steering column then you can simply buy a retrofit computer from bmw
