After 27000 careful miles, mainly motorway, my 2010 Cooper S tells me I need new front pads. Even at 2,000 it equated to 27,000 miles based on miles to go.

The thing wasn't due a service until 23,000 miles, and is averaging 45mpg, so clearly no Hooligan in it!

Can the pads really be up already, or is it just based on generic mileage rather than wear?

Before I get flamed, the S was bought for a torque machine to waft around in with the occasional hoon, I have my mental fixes elsewhere!

That's not a bad mileage for your pads.

In our last Cooper (granted not an S) we got 60 000 miles out of both front and rear pads.

The warning suggested that said they had 1000 miles left lasted for about 10000 miles.

I'd be tempted to wait and see, but it does sound a bit early if your only wafting

We have had a similar experience to Nigel. When we bought our Mini it had 17000 miles on the clock and claimed it needed the pads changing in 1100 miles.

The Mini is now on almost 32000 miles and it still says 1100 miles to change the pads. (The wear indicators are notoriously unreliable). At our last service, the service guy reckoned there was gennuinely about 1000 miles left on the rear pads and about 5000 on the fronts.

(It was a little unusual having the rears wear before the fronts though????)

It is possible your pads have already been changed and the cbs not reset or the old sensor left on.
