Hi just bought a MCS 2007. Car has done around 27000miles. Was thinking of fitting the upgraded tensioner in and attempt to pre-empt the dreaded 'death rattle' Do not have the problem (yet) and do not want it. Have spoken with 'The Experts official and independant with various contradictory views', hence looking for solutions. Car has had 2 services and I will be doing a filter and oil change.

Appreciate all thoughts on this matter.

It's not worth changing the tensioner until you get the cold start rattle. If and when it does happen it will be an hours work and a £30 part.

Dunno about the R56 but if the design is anything like the R53 it's one bolt & ten minutes work. It was the least concerning job I've ever done on the car.

If you wait until you get the rattle then the whole lot is likely to need changing, tensioner, chain, sprocket, guides etc...

Consider a Mini Insured Warranty. It's a great product on a car where the rattle could be the least of your worries...

Are you sure it has not been changed already?

I'd second that - if it isn't doing it at 27k it's likely that the work has already been done

General opinion is to have a MINI Insured Warranty, it's an affordable but good product. It's a shame to have to, but the cars are so good to drive and such good value for money, it's a small price to pay IMO.
