Silencer replacement
Discussion
My wife's 03 (R50?) Cooper failed it's MOT on 2nd fast idle emissions and the cause is assumed to be the small hole in the rear silencer.
Mini dealers want £350 + fitting so that's out.
At the other end of the spectrum, Kwik Fit want £261.75 inc a clamp and fitting.
She is fairly conservative so just a tad more noise would be ok but nothing silly so is the Kwick Fit OK (never bought an exhaust from them) or is there something better as a rear system that will be close in price but not turn a maturing lady in her mid 50's into a chav.
I might be selling her short as she moans about next door's TT TFSi sounding weak and that my new to me JCW is failry quiet too and many years ago her Golf GTi was pretty loud but times do change.
Also needs to be fully road legal - she only drives about 3k a years so overspending is pointless.
Cheers
David

It's not really my thing so thanks for the info.
The hole has been an advisory for 2 years but the car only does 3k a year. It's the first port of call.
Looking at the rear box last night, it's in a hell of a state and needs replacing anyway - I've got a local guy to do the back section, bracket and tail piece for £220 all in, and at my house so no wasted time shunting around and waiting.
We'll see how it goes from there.

The silencer box is double skinned, bits have been dropping off the outer skin of ours for 3 or 4 years and now we're down to just the inner skin. Earlier this year the mounting strap broke off - on eBay I found 1000s of replacement straps for sale so I guess that is a common failure point. Not that it helps you much with the emissions problem - maybe your car just needs a good blast from time to time?
Interesting. The outer skin is peeling away like curled up bread - a good run over a bumpy road or cruddy field would probably rip it off.
It gets a good run around every month as we always try and take it for a bit of a thrash / longer run.
I think it's a victim of low miles most days but it's hardly been a money pit.
It needs doing anyway and the MOT guys suggested this route - they don't do repairs (Just MOT's in Bexhill) so have no vested interest in getting remedial work and I've used them on all my cars for maybe 7 or 8 years now with only a worn tyre as a fail a 5 years ago..

Any local garage would surely only charge at most an hours labour to fit it.

I did see those but couldn't equate such a vast difference in price, even from Kwik Fit, let alone the £300 from Mini - all that for £60 seems like a kitchen foil exhaust that wouldn't make it to the next MOT so I did chicken out.
No DIY for me as my back won't take clambering under the car - they guy coming to do it is only charging an hour unless he has trouble getting it apart.

Hadn't thought about Euro Car Parts but I'm committed now so will trust the guy who has been recommended to me.
I've always been in the genuine parts loop so all this is new to me.
I got fed up buying expensive newer cars when slightly older ones are just as good (generally) and cost far less to buy and run - more to spend on bikes and holidays!!
It's got to be sorted by 26th as that is when the current MOT runs out and we are supposed to be having a home holiday next week so don't really want to spend all the time at a garage.
