Mini Cooper S/JCW R56 - talk to me
Discussion
Ok so I was just browsing in the local BMW/Mini dealers the other day and got 'sold' on the idea of leasing a new Mini.
£223 p/m for a Cooper S or £273 p/m for a JCW (both with Chilli Packs)
Incidentally the dealer didn't know what the hell she was talking about - she didn't know what a Supercharger was, was totally unaware that the R56 is a different car to the R53 and didn't even know the Cooper S was turbo charged, thinking instead that the S was for supercharged even though she didn't know what one was!
I've booked in for a test drive next week but just wondered what these cars are realistically like to live with.
What is the ride like?
Is it bone shattering like the R53 Cooper S?
What are they like to use for long distances?
Do they return as good mpg as BMW claims they do?
How do they respond to regular track thrashings?
Coming from over ten years in BMW saloons and coupes I now fancy a small nimble daily city car and I'm wondering if I can live with a smaller car day to day (will still be keeping the e92 M3 for the odd Euro trip and weekend blast until I change to the M4)

I had a 2009 JCW which I got rid of early last year so can offer some insight, but note that over time some changes have been made so MPG for instance might improve a bit in a new one.
I would avoid going for the super-sporty suspension option as it will make the ride unbearable - the JCW on "standard" suspension was better than the Cooper S I had previously
The car is best described as a bit of a hooligan, it definitely wants to be driven fast everywhere! I generally got around 26-28mpg to a tank but on a motorway run 40mpg is a possibility if you don't take the mickey too much with the speed limit, and long gentle A-road runs can yield 45mpg if you're careful.

I have an 09 S, ride is w
ky, it's alright on long journeys, but when the going gets rough... I have Cruise Control etc.
MPG is sitting at an average of 32/33 over two tanks of not caring.
Last weekend I went for a hoon and averaged 23mpg, the 220mi trip yesterday (100 motorway - 20 city - 100 motorway) yeilded 39mpg

1. What is the ride like?, Is it bone shattering like the R53 Cooper S? Didn't have an R53, but yes our is hard. It's the standard suspension with 17" wheels and RFTs.
2. What are they like to use for long distances? Ours is mainly used as a method of getting my wife to work and back. On the few log journeys we've done it's been OK, but both of my 1 series have been much better. They're a bit more noisy, the ride more jittery and the seat/driving position worse.
3. Do they return as good mpg as BMW claims they do? Taking it easy my wife's getting 41-43 on the daily commute on A roads and dual carriage ways. A heavier left foot will reduce this significantly.
4. How do they respond to regular track thrashings? Pass.

6 months rental is the deposit.
All prices quoted were + VAT Also a maintenance contract (to include tyres and servicing) added a further £13 - £15 or so.
I think these deals are due to the R56 being discontinued imminently.
I don't think you'll be able to get an F56 JCW for a while, so they will probably continue after the other R56 models have been replaced All prices quoted were + VAT Also a maintenance contract (to include tyres and servicing) added a further £13 - £15 or so.
