I'm new about BMW minis (I'm a long time Griffith and Corvette forum member and owner), I just got my new JCW 2013 Mini which initially was supposed to be parked in my son's garage but, actually, the car is so a happy experience for an enthusiast driver like me that I've decided it's going to be parked in my garage...yes I know I knowhehe

The car is fun but, for my very personal taste, it has about 50 hp less then what what would make it really enjoyable.

Question: where to mod? Exhaust? filter? Ported head? Larger intercooler?

Where to start, who should I call?

Thanks a lot.
Giuseppe

Pop over to mini torque, they have all the answers.

Basicly if you want it beyond 245 hp and 350 Nm of torque, you will need a larger intercooler and GT28 turbo setup. That will push it over 270 hp. But remember it's the torque that makes a lot of difference even with a simple remap (big intercooler is still recommended) going from 280 to 350 Nm.

I'd rather go to a larger intercooler, air inlet, sport exhaust system, ported BV head...

What's the best (reliable) place where to start shopping?

Thanks for your advices and comments.

I would strongly consider evolve based in Luton by j12 on the M1. They are good guys and will definitely get you the 50hp increase you are looking for!

Hi "panic"

I replied to the other thread on this forum about power upgrades so forgive me for just cutting and pasting below. I have close to 270 (268 in fact) with a re-map plus Forge intercooler and Miltec downpipe, work was done at performance torque in solihull, well worth the drive for me. My car is a 2010 clubman JCW

Post below:

Hi,

I have Forge Motorsport bigger intercooler and Miltec sport downpipe on my Clubman JCW plus a remap. All done by Performance Torque in Solihull. Car is now making around 270bhp and bigger torque. I had the work done 18 months ago and have never looked back, completely reliable and no warranty/servicing issues when going back to mini dealer for a service (although if something went bang they might I guess). The extra power absolutely transforms the car in my opinion, stock JCW brakes are more than up to the job and so far I have resisted coilovers as the car is very well damped for the road on the sport suspension.

I did a lot of research at the time, Evolve have a good reputation as well but I called and spoke to Will at Performance Torque who talked me through what I was looking for and fitted the intercooler, pipe and did the remap in a day. He has worked on the mini challenge cars as I understand and maps a lot of Britcar engines as well so knows his stuff.

Good luck, only other thing I would say is go for it, you won't be dissappointed, I came out of an E39M5 into the mini and day to day it is much more fun to drive.

I'd go for it tomorrow if I was living in UK, the problem I have is that my car (and me) are here in (northern) Spain at the moment and I do not have a bit of confidence to let a garage to remap the car over here, Evolve seems to have a way to remap the engine via computer... but maybe I could get a chip remapped to match the other mods by the same people who sells me the intercooler and the decatted pipe?
That would be a good enough alternative for me...

Thanks for the advices.

Companies like shark will send it a device to flash a map on for you (not sure if they do one for mini though as I have only seen it done in VAG cars)

You could try contacting evolve or p torque and see if they would email you the file to flash?

How do the front wheels handle all that power without massive torque steer and wheel spin?

In fact the car handles the extra power pretty well, with the electronics switched on anyway - the jcw mini has an "electronic lsd" which uses individual wheel braking to distribute power to the road. It has used a set of front pads quicker than the Cooper S before it did though.

I am not sure why but Torque steer even with the electronics off on the JCW is a lot less noticeable than it was on my Cooper S clubman which was also tuned but less power and torque.

It still pays to keep a firm grip on the wheel though :-)
