Help me.

I'm a fking fking idiot.

So let me explain.

We have to go back to May 2013

The wife's cavalier was causing some issues, and whilst I replaced the cam belt, I decided that it's early retirement, following 13 years of ownership, was desirable.

I happened to see a local garage had both Honda Jazz and Mini Cooper which were my 2 choices for the wife (I make a short list, she either says no to all of them, and I have to come up with another short list, or she picks one, and I buy it)

Anyway with an eye on the fact that youngest daughter is learning to drive, I got some quotes off tinternet, with dates and ages pretending that there was a recent driving test pass.

I got a number of quotes on various cars, including JAZZ, Mini one, Mini Cooper, Cavalier (the baseline), P reg 1.0 micra, and a 1.0 corsa. And for good luck I added our son, just in case he wanted to take me to the pub when he is home from university. (He bought all the premiums down)

Anyway, The highest price was corsa 1.0 (I kid you not), followed by cooper and one. Then there was a big gap to cav 1.8, and a small gap to micra and finally the Honda jazz.

So there was 'only' £700 difference between the Jazz and the Cooper, and so we decided on the "fk it, it's only money" approach to decision making, and went with the wife's heart.

Now This is where I need help.

I screwed up monumentally. I got my daughter's date of birth wrong by 3 years.

Her test is on Friday, and I'm either getting "We won't insure a 17 year old on a hot hatch," or I'm getting a quote that is erm a bit higher than I have budgeted for.

Plus the Adrian Flux st about Fronting "We won't insure anyone under 25 as a named driver as it's clearly fronting" fk off you tt's. You've had £1000's off me and the wife over the years, insuring all sorts of classics and daily drivers. tts.

I digress. I need help. Before Friday I need to find a quote that is a lot lower, from a real insurance company (No ghosts thank you!!!)

I don't want to sell the mini, and buy another car........wife would be devastated, and we'd loose money on the sale, equivalent to the extra insurance I haven't budgeted for....Plus I've got the mini into a reliable state.

Any tips and Ideas.

When I bought my young OH with a poor driving record her Cooper S as her first insured car (previously using a company vehicle) A Plan Tunbridge Wells almost managed to match Flux's price (within £30) but got our business as they took a sensible, personal, reasoned approach to finding what was far superior cover.

When I explained our issues they were the only company I called that actually listened - it seems that is a rare skill amongst brokers.

Matt.

I can save £500 plus or minus 20% (depending on all the drivers actions) if I went to the Co-op and allowed them to fit a Spybox. Er no.

Hi mate, right, a few ideas for e off and more for test day so as not to derail things. look at getting a policy for 24 hours use with your daughter as the driver etc so she is legal and not victim to this.

Then cancel the policy or cancel her as named driver. You've sadly buggered up, I know not what you wish to hear, but I did the same a few moons ago with my mrs and if it had needed to be settled, the fact a named drivers details were wrong would invalidate the policy even if I was driving. As such cancel it or amend it and buy her flowers! Forever!!

Failing that, knock her off policy then look to a more intelligent broker, Admiral are relatively human if on multi policy and also Sheila's wheels or Quinn for new female drivers.

Sorry to add bad news, hope you get it sorted, but bear in mind the policy is in effect void at present.

I think you're looking at it the worng way.

Sit your daughter down and tell her you've lied to her her whole life. Explain that she was a little bit 'slow' when she was younger so she started school late and is therefore 3 years older than she thinks (burn her birth certificate!) - if she tries arguing, explain again that she's 'slow' and doesn't undertsand the in's an out's of it etc

Then all you need to do is get the correct documents,.... get someone to sign for a new passport (vicars are good, they won't think you're lying to them and the government won't think that a vicar would lie), use that to get another driving licence with the 'correct' DOB on it. Stick with current insurers, keeps the money in your pocket, keeps the wife happy.

Pretty much job 'jobbed' as far as I'm concerned.

Luckily, I didn't actually take any insurance out, it was quotes I was getting. She will be insured via marmalade provisional only until she passes her test.

I spoke to A plan. They Could not come within a GRAND of the £2400 quote from Diamond...or 1900 from Co op with a box

Interesting I re-ran the confused quote with the Mx5 and it's.......Drum Roll......£2176....or 1989 TPFT....Which given the excess is £600 isn't an issue really.

Can't wait to see what my wife says when I tell her.

Well. An interesting 24 hours after daughter passed her test on Friday.

My well off and incredibly generous parents, came up trumps and offered to give us the difference between the quotes I had back in May, and the best quote I'd had.

I spent 3/4 hour on the internet, turning the quote into a policy and paying £2467 on my credit card. To start the following morning at mid day

Then I phoned wife's current insurer to cancel that, as I'd previously tried via their customer portal, to add both our kids to the policy.

Well, suddenly they are offering to insure them both which would take the annual policy to £2003, which would be an additional £1763 for the remaining 11.5 months.

So I clarified, that they were absolutely sure about this, and yes they were. So I said, "Right well I've just taken out a policy to start tomorrow but I can cancel it for a fee, so I need to make sure that cancels before I go ahead with your price." Was assured that it would definitely go through.

Spent an hour trying and eventually cancelling the other policy, and contacting credit card company to make sure there would not be an issue, and that they could not take the cash.

Then wife's insurer was shut for the night.

9 am Saturday I phone them, and say I want to take out the policy and well, no they won't do it because of daughter's age and son's lack of driving experience.

Anyway, stood my ground and eventually they agreed to go with it.

Which is good, because I would have ended up having to follow through my threat of finding new insurers for our house insurance, and my car insurance.

At which point I phoned my Mum, thanking them, and told her I didn't now need her money. She was pretty clear that it was my dad who is trying to get rid of all their money before it goes to the tax man, and had I asked her she would have sent a tenner. Lol. I always assumed my mum was the generous one.

I know your situation is complicated but worth looking at money supper market .com no spaces. They have a good guide to getting the best price for insurance. It takes a bit of time but if you look at what you can get off its worth the time. Me Flux has always been good to me but at the moment is trying to get bigger and is starting to get it wrong. I hope they will getting things back in hand soon as they can be very good.

Not sure? You're a 'con man' (confidence trickster??) for crying out loud. How can you be not sure?? Surely you should be able to tell the difference

Definately a moron!
