The Service light has appeared on my wifes Cooper ( 2010 ) at 26k miles, and Mini say it's because it needs front pads, and rear pads very shortly. Does this not seem excessive ( the car is driven quite slowly and smoothly ) or does this sound about right ? I've never had a car that has supposedly gone through them so quickly. Her previous A class didn't even need tyres until 50k miles.

Thanks

I bought my R56 at 11k miles, it required front pads at 20k and rears at 28k. Creeping towards 50k now and haven't had to replace the fronts again, but the bulk of that mileage has been on the motorway.

Yes it depends on usage. If the fronts are due then it's unlikely the rears are though, it's a classic money spinner. Shine a torch through the wheel and you can assess how much material there is left at the rear, which I bet will be more than 6mm, ie loads of miles, like 20k...

Don't use MINI for brake consumables either, they're twice the price at least ; any local garage can do the job in 20 minutes worth of labour. Parts are peanuts. Textar a good alternative brand (probably OE).

Thanks for that, I guess it sounds about right, just not as long lasting as I was expecting / hoping !

I'm approaching 21k miles in my MINI and due to have my front tyres replaced next week; strongly expecting front pads to be due for replacement quite soon too.

We've had this warning light on both our R56s. The first one was the Cooper and we got about 15000 miles more out of the pads before they needed changing at about 60000 miles.

On our Cooper S, the fronts warning came on at about 23000 miles and the rears about 27000 miles. So far its done 30000 miles and I've not changed them; I had a look at the pads and decided that there was plenty of pad left (>6mm) and just left it.

It is possible yours need to be replaced, but I'd ask the question about remaining pad depth and see on what basis they're claiming the pads need to be replaced. I'm always dubious about this part of CBS.

Wear will depend on the type of driving. My wife's easy on the brakes and the type of journeys the cars have done have been quite easy on the brakes.

Thanks for that, it's a while since I've been involved with a BMW main dealer, I'll have a look at them and if necessary get them done elsewhere.

For comparison, my R56S is asking for Rear pads in 1,200mi, it's on 31,200 at the moment.
