Y cable for R56 (10 plate)

Just purchased the OH a Cooper S on a 10 plate, its got a usb and aux input, but the Y cable BMW offered did not work with the iPhone 5 connected but the older iPhone does work on the older cable. Has anyone else had this problem and is there a fix, BMW didn't seemed fairly clueless, thought I would ask on here before going back to Mini.
From what I've heard from my dealer they are bringing out another Y cable later in the year that will be compatible with the new 'lightning' connector on the updated iphone and ipods. I queried why they can't just to USB connections like every other manufacturer and they gave me some guff about licencing from apple.
What might work - I haven't tried it yet - is to plug 2 separate cables (one usb to lightning and one 3mm aux) into the various connections on the iphone and see if it works like that. Or buy the 20 pin to lightning converter from apple.
