Just had a coolant leak diagnosed by a specialist who determined the thermostat housing was to blame. No surprise there.

However, on the quote for the rectification, he suggested they "may as well change the thermostat and the radiator cap while we're in there."

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but the radiator cap isn't in there, its on the radiator and has nothing to do with the housing or the leak?

Equally, does the thermostat also need to be replaced, or is he just trying to get more money from me? I can understand the thermostat might be a preventative measure but the rad cap is going a bit far, no?

For the low cost of a thermostat you might as well get it replaced whilst he's doing the thermostat housing anyway.

I would guess the rad cap can be replaced at any time, so don't really see the point of doing it as part of this work. You can change it yourself if you need to.
