What model MINI do you have?
I have found a similar issue with the R53 and R56 models. It seems to take a little drive before I can get it to open - not sure if the battery charging up helps moving it (probably in my head!1
)
Once it is open, I use WD40 to clean down (with a paint brush and rag) and then use a small amount of lithium grease and wind the mechanism back and forth. This seemed to work for me - but probably not recommended1

Common issue, the roof mechanism sticks in warm weather, sometimes giving it a little help by pushing the glass up at the same time as pressing the button works.
Its an expensive fix as BMW will say it needs a complete new sunroof cassette, they know its a bad design but won't help rectifying it.
