Mini rough/jumpy idle and rattle

Hi all,

New to the Mini club here- picked up a 2010 One with 68k. Few days after having it, the idle became very rough and jumpy, goes from 500-1800 rpm. Noticed a rattle/squeal too, not sure if this is the death rattle? Sparks need to be checked for gapping etc, going to get that done, but in the mean time has anyone experienced similar to any avail?

Assuming it is the N14 engine it will likely need a walnut shell blast/de-coke, these are very common symptoms.

Even if it is the later N18 engine they also suffer but significantly less.

Check oil level and the state of the cam chain/guides, easy job to pop off the cam cover to have a looksee.
