Going to look at a 2013 Cooper D. No experience of the older diesel engines (other than my F54 diesel) so anything I need to look at other than the usual checks?
Forget it and look for a newer F series instead. 2013 R5x generation has the N47 engine with a penchant for sh!tting the timing chain with catastrophic results. Who knows what servicing neglect it has already suffered in 12 years. I stupidly helped a friend look for a replacement MINI a couple of years ago and we found a nice 2013 Cooper D, but it lasted only about 6 months before the chain tensioner failed without any warning.chrisch77 said:

I have a local indie who can replace the chain for <500
I prefer the r56 to f56 as a car to "drive", I still have one of each now, this is a "spare"

Just look for one with a recent chain & clutch replacement & good service from that point. Then map out the EGR asap and clean the inlet manifold out, and make sure you do oil changes every 6k miles.
I was waiting for your comment. You've probably played with more of these than most.Well... deal is done. 2012 Cooper D with.... wait for it... 114K on the clock.
MOT's all clear, never even an advisory and a full service history was claimed but the paperwork is a bit patchy, however it looks like oil at least every 20K. The clutch is good and it had a new turbo at 90K.
To my mind that suggests it was being looked after and the chain was done at some point (logic makes me think why spend 1.5K on turbo etc if you hadn't done the chain previously). At least I can hope that.
Noise wise it started cold this morning 8C without any rattle or clatter. Sounded like a petrol, certainly MUCH better than my old F54 diesel.
I'm going to run it for a couple of weeks and see how it goes before I spend anything more on it and if it seems to be reasonable I'll bring it up to the same standard as my other (petrol) R56.
How do I map the EGR out?
I had a local (Cheshire) mobile mapping chap come around & map it out, the inlet manifold on the one I am currently putting back together (on 100k) is minging

This one is way ahead in terms of performance. I suspect someone has already had a go at stuff with the new turbo etc but I will have a look after some more pressing probs like wheel bearings and brakes that need addressing. Shame theres no invoice for clutch or chain (but then there arent any others either other than the turbo).
I'm going to run it for a few weeks, do the brakes, change the oil and see where it stands.

Oh and turbo is an engine out job, so anyone with any sense would throw a new clutch in while it is out. Keep the oil clean and they are okay.
It is possible to get the turbo out, I did mine earlier this year. Getting the heat shield bolts off the dpf is tricky but doable. Edited by Twolane on Friday 5th December 20:08

Any idea on this? Looks like a mod or fix of some sort but pics of N47 cars on ebay show similar looms with tape?
The difference is this one is getting hot! I've retaped and will try to adjust the position but interested to know if anyone else has similar?
ETA: this is a 2012 1.6 N47, not the 2.0

Is that actually heat or is it a reaction to the self-amalgamating tape?
I m going to say heat as tge edges of the soundproofing are crumbly and black but it s something to check out tomorrow when Xmas hols begin! Not being argumentative in saying it is, just could be worth ruling it out before you think there is a problem.
Heating up should be very easy to check out.

Sounds promising, hopefully not a problem then.
Thanks for the help. No evidence of "melting" or any damage to the wiring itself, only the tape and the soundproofing so hopefully fixed.I will re-wrap in black gaffer tape and monitor. I've only had the car a couple of weeks and I have no real history for it. Could be a minor clitch or one of many issues to resolve.

same vintage, seems someone already went over the factory tape with insulation tape on mine before I got it.
