Obviously you will be getting the new box if you are going to a hardtop. You will get the old tractor box if you got with a convertible. Or a pre 56 reg car.

Other than that just the usual really.. the new box is pretty good, has tip, paddle ect. Seems to be a vast improvement on the old box for sure.

The original MINI came with a CVT box on the Cooper, whereas the Cooper S came with a proper tiptronic box. The R56 comes with a tiptronic box regardless of model AFAIK.

My Mum has had an R52 Cooper for 2 years now, on 75k now with no problems at all with the box (or the car, for that matter). Economy is st though.. 30mpg at the best of times and she drives it like a granny...

Edit to say: I had heard that the CVT could cause problems at high mileage but no signs of this yet. Most Auto's seem to be quite highly spec'd and also seem to retain their value a bit better too.
