My sister has a one year old Mini D, which she has just been told by her dealer has a cracked block. There is no explanation at present as to why it has cracked. The dealer is intending to replace the block and pistons.

Has anyone experienced this?

The replacement of the block and pistons rather than the engine seems somewhat odd to me. Do you think this is the correct approach?

Thanks in advance for your views.

Yeah its a little odd for that engine.

you normally replace all the pistons together so thats ok. replacing just the block with pistons is ok though.

The engine does not have a history of cracking, I think its the toyota block

To replace the block and pistons is quite normal, there needs to be 3 major component failures for the entire engine to be replaced.

those being cylinder head, block and crankshaft. as the head is not effected then a block and pistons is the way forward here.

Do they mean a short engine, or just block & pistons?

Just block and pistons.
Yea does seem a bit strange that they would use old main bearing shells in a new block etc.

BMW's block and pistons is generally a short engine as in it will be block, pistons, con rods and crank....

Not a good outcome on this one. The dealer is adamant that block and pistons is sufficient. BMW are not interested. So looks as though a engine rebuilt by the dealer is the only way forward.

Thanks for the info.

Its a Peugeot/Ford engine isnt it confused (assuming its the 1.6 110 your talking about)

I don't trust dealers replacing/rebuilding engines on cars tbh. IMO get them to fix and then get rid of the car sharp-ish, otherwise it may end up been a liability. They are never quite the same after a big change like that.
