06 cooper about six weeks ago I noticed it using a cup or so of water every week. And thought I might have a
small leak in the rad so I put in some rad weld. It seemed to cure it. Until a few days ago I noticed the
cooling fan coming on and staying on allot more than usual but no water leaks and levels all regular
but today siting in traffic for a short while and again I noticed the fan on. Then the temp gauge showed
It over heating and the red warning light flashing. So I pulled over and stopped the engine and opened
the bonnet and the fan keep running for about a minute and stopped. So I started the engine again
and all seemed fine so I drove on for another half hour or so and all seemed fine. I'm a bit concerned
in case it's over hearing or has over heated. I want to try and catch it before it turns into a problem
or breaks down any help greatfully accepted.

Hi there mate check for staining around the thermostat housing as leaking from the housing is quite common. If theres any signs replace the housing and the thermostat.

That makes allot of sence. A few weeks back on a cold morning
I was sitting at traffic lights when I noiced steam coming out from
the passenger side grill. That's what made me think leaking rad
the car is due a service according to the dislpay in 650 miles
so I'll get on the phone and book the service for this week. The car
is still under warranty and this is it's last tlc (43k)
do you reckon it's still ok to drive ? or will it cause damage ?
also a for a few months now the yellow warning light in the middle
above the elc light has been coming on and off. Related problem ?

Thanks for your help

Thanks for your help. Left the mini into the dealership this evening
they also seem to think it's the thermostat and housing and said
it should all be covered under waranty which was welcome news
so hopefully all sorted by tomorrow evenng (fingers crossed)

Car back this evening with new thermostat and housing so hopefull all sorted so I'll wait a see. All under waranty. Thanks for the help. While the mini was in they also replaced the drive shaft oil seals and the front suspension mounts under waranty also. So good job all round with only 43,500 miles on the clock I wonder what next ?

Hi there again i work in a dealer and its only normally the thermostat which is really common or sometimes the radiator leaks on one of the bottom corners make sure the electric fan is also cutting in when you get it back.

I will thanks. That's what brought it to my attention originally. It came on quite early and after a while seemed to go harder as if another fan was kicking in. If I get a chance tomorrow I'll let it tickover in the drive. Thanks
