Daughters 18'th present already with problems.
Discussion
My Daughter got this last Thursday and up until this morning it was lovelly but she went out and only got to the end of the road and tried to turn the wheel, guess what, power steering gone but when she switched it off and re started it worked. Ive read a few threads on this problem and will be taking it back to the dealer asap. What a way to start a relationship with a car.

My Mum had some issues with her 52 Cooper a couple of years back when the power steering cut out a few times over a month or so. Turning off the engine and restarting would reset the problem and it would be fine from then on. The car hasn't had the pump replaced and it absolutely fine still (touch wood).
MINI Power Steering failure is a very common problem though!

Thanks for the replies, luckilly its form a Cherished Mini dealer so under 12 months waranty so should be no problems getting it done anyway. It apparently did it first thing this morning and after she re started the engine it seemed to go away so maybe a similar case to the other one. Ive brought it into work and its driving fine but still going to take it in to the dealer to get it checked over.
Cheers
ps. I havent checked my spelling or my punctuation so have a ball with it

Ignore the grammar police, some people have nothing better to do than pick at other people's postings. Cheers

As far as the steering issue goes, get it into a dealer. The power steering pump going is a known issue and should be fixed without argument from the dealer. Once the power steering does go it can be a bugger to get the car to turn; my alternator went a few years back as I was going around a roundabout, it was very, very difficult to get the car to the side of the road and I am no 18 year old girl.
No fights, just stand your ground. When I had an issue they were great in Southampton, in the supplying dealer they were not so nice. They did not want to do the work on the car so in full view of the service department and I called customer services in Mini HQ and explained the case. I passed the phone to the dealer rep who looked very white for they should of just done the work.
Phone comes back to me and customer services asked if I wanted the work done else where as they could hear that my faith and trust had gone. They arranged for the garage in Southampton to do it and no issues with anything or anybody and I continue to go there for everything.
Still I hope that your supplying dealer is understanding...Keep us posted.

So far so good, took it in and they agreed the steering was heavy and that there was also a noise fron the thrust bearing (should have been picked up on the inspection), my daughter has been given a courtesy car and as their insurance wont cover her we paid to have it put on hers and they have even refunded the money. All in all its thumbs up so far but we dont have the car back yet.

We had this exact problem and car was out of warranty.
Had a dispute with BMW UK and our Main Dealer.
We stood our ground and stated we would take legal action as we felt this was a major issue.
Eventually BMW stated that if we paid a nominal amount towards the part we would receive a 2 year warranty and the work would be carried out no charge.
We were happy with this outcome and so far no further problems.
Hope this helps ?
