Its actually a big improvement to ditch the runflats.

We're running Goodyear Eagles on our Mini and they're so much better than the run flats.

I was having so many punctures when i had runflats it was just getting stupid paying £120 a tyre for the 17inch s lights i think they were called so when i upgraded to the works 18inch wheels i put pirellis all round, had a few punctures and just got them plugged smile

why did you not just get the runflats repaired?

When I was getting loads of RF punctures in 2006 ish repairing RF's was still not allowed. A year or so later when the regs changed the garage who had sold me repeated new tyres then offered to sell me the part worn RF's back to me cheap. Great.

I was told that the rims were designed to take the thicker walled tyre and therefore if you put non runflats on then it wouldnt seal correctly?

is this just bks so that they can sell me more expensive tyres?

Is it OK to run on a mix of run-flats and non-run-flats in pairs or do you have to replace all 4 to make the switch?

What differance in ride is there from the run flats to normal tyres?

The run flat tyres have such stiff sidewalls that they can support the weight of the car when they have no air in them.

Therefore it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out how little compliance there is as the tyre tries to flollow the contours of the road. Change to proper tyres as fitted to 99% of other cars on the road and you will be amazed. The mini becomes a pleasure to drive rather than bouncing around as you change direction. The run flats are cr4p but keep them for re-sale time. An anorak might want the `proper` tyres fitted and they are welcome to them. We went Goodyear Eagles on advice from other mini owners.

If we bought another mini it would be very high on my list of jobs to do asap.

i hat a bit of a debate with an arse of a tyre place man who was all "ooh they were engineered to have runflats you shoudln;t change them etc etc".

well they weren;t and everyone knows it. r53s were intended to run proper tyres and then it was only at the end of the programme that they changed over to them.

i have had vredestein ultracs - great in wet and last well. actually i found them to be very good all round (as road car).

re 040 potenzas. feel good quality. move around. very progressive.

and now i have re040s on back and cheapo (150 a pair) falken 912s on the front. you won;t set lap times on them but they're progressive like the 040s but half the price. they're not as good but i;d say they were 95% as good for 50% the cost. also you can get great cop show squeal from them hehe

Do normal tyres stop the droning like a worn wheel bearing noise?

depends on which ones (!) but yes a bit. but mostly it's because for a >17k car the sound insulation isn't that good..! hehe

Right that settles it i am changing to normal tyres the size i have at the moment is 205/40 r18 82w had a look on blackcircles and there is'nt any apart from runflats in that size do i need 215/35 r18 and will the side wall be smaller at 35 or is that a % of width and make it the same size in measured height (hope that makes some sense smile )
Thanks for replies

I wouldn't they react differently and could make the car unstable.

there was a guy on here with a very quick works cab. he had 18" yoko paradas and had to have (admittedly thin) spacers.

can;t remmebr who it was. any ideas anyone?

up to you but assuming you have std sized brakes i'd consider going down to 17" or even ideally 16s. prob find tyres easier(??) with the 17s (205 45 17") but the 16"s best for really 'attacking' fun driving...

i otfen think about going down to 16s...
