-40 on display

On the rev counter on a mini one I am about to get it displays -40. I was told that this was normal and would require an extra cable to get working. Is this normal, fault or option not fitted? And is it ment to be the outside temp? Thanks for any info.

That's the outside temp, it sounds like the thermometer is buggered as they start a -40 when you plug them in and calibrate to the outside air temp.
IF you're handy with spanners it's just a case of taking the front bumper off and clipping a new thermometer in, otherwise it's down to the garage for 1/2 or maybe an hours labour.
