Family member has a Mini Cooper, and the power steering appears to have died.

A quick Google reveals that this is a common issue, although no recalls have ever been issued.

The local mini dealer has quoted a staggering £1100 to fix it, which given some people have been getting (or claiming) 50% goodwill payments from their dealers, is a little harsh.

It looks like BBA Reman sell the pumps for £250 on an exchange basis. Is it a particularly nasty job to replace?

Any suggestions / advice would be much appreciated.

While I can't offer any advice directly, I'd suggest having a look in the Faults & Fixes section over on MINI2, specifically this thread which may be of some interest.

Local dealer is taking the utter piss. Pump costs about £400 or so, plus 45 mins to an hour for labour. I ended up getting mine done by the dealer as part of a massive service recently, with a 10% discount as the car is over 6 years old. I was offered 50% off the parts a year ago but couldn't afford to go ahead at the time. Depends on your dealer, some people have received a replacement, some discounts, some nothing. Buy yes, it's a known issue that mini aren't too keen to fix.

I'm told the job itself is relatively easy and should take about an hour if you've got some mechanical nous. I have bugger all. The reconditioned parts include a surcharge, refunded when you return yours for reconditioning.

Hello stranger, how’s tricks?

BBA Reman do the pumps for £250 on an exchange basis, and the rest looks about right.

I agree, the dealer is taking the piss. Unfortunately it seems that the work has been done as the car was undriveable.

Interesting that you got a 10% discount for the car being over 6. The owner contacted Mini UK and was basically told to go forth and multiply.
