I have a MY05 Cooper S with 50k on the clock.

Recently when I start her up there is a odd tapping noise. This instantly vanishes when the clutch is depressed and I move off, the noise does not reappear once the car has warmed up.

Could this be gearbox or clutch related. A few Google searches have shown the gearbox could well be the issue and as the car is out of warranty I would like to get to the bottom of this asap before I do some damage and incur a reasonable bill.

Was the same gearbox fitted to the R56?

Could be thrust bearing.

Mine's got this, going to get the clutch replaced at the same time, may as well while there is access.
