Mini One 04 clutch replacement / gearbox removal

The clutch started slipping this morning, so I had a quick look at the Haynes manual and whilst looking a bit long winded, the job seemed quite straightforward.

I followed their instructions and hit my first problem when I realised they had forgotten to mention that the front bumper needed to be removed.

I have now got the gearbox free, but it doesn't clear the subframe that the streeing rack is attached to - does this need to be dropped too?

Anyone else tried to follow the Haynes manaul and noticed critical steps missing?
