Clubman Cooper S
Discussion
Hi, currently looking at changing the wifes X-type estate for a clubman, initially we thought cooper D for the bargain-tastic running costs, but dismissed it as she generally does very short journeys and because of the lack of choice in the used market within budget (circa £11k).
Moved on quickly through the cooper to settle on the cooper s, as on paper it seems to cost little more to run, and secondhand examples generally seem better specced.
We’re looking at a late 2007 or early 2008 car with our budget, with mileages from 30-60k.
Firstly, I would like to know if we are being realistic on running costs.
Going on the book mpg of 45 combined, it would seem to be better than our diesel Xtype. The Jag only returns around 38mpg as on many of her journeys it barely even gets upto temperature. Is the claimed 45mpg real world? Obviously if and when she hoons it this will drop considerably, but day to day is this realistic? TBH, we would be happy if she could return the same as the jag and anything better would be a bonus.
Also, do all of these cars have the stop/start function? Her 5mile commute is through heavy traffic so this would seem beneficial.
Other question is how does mini TLC work? We’ve seen cars advertised with this, but understand it runs out at 50k miles. Can it be extended?
Any other advice appreciated.

Cool, cheers for that!
Your car sounds great, but unfortunately to buy private I need to sell our car first. I also have a bike to sell too but could just about sub myself that amount.
Let me know when you're in a position to go with it, and colour spec etc... if we've our car sold by then I'd be really interested.

Yes, it's close to brand new condition.
It has Chili Pack (which is a must), blinds and cargo net that is about it, apart from the JCW wheels I added after purchase. It's rare to find but a car with an auto wiper would be a good choice. It's a PITA not to even have an intermittent wipe.

We test drove a couple yesterday and were really impressed.
One had quite a decent spec, including auto-wipers, iPOD connection etc..
We've decided however we're going to sell our car first to give us the best possible choice, as we have 2 other cars we can take our time finding the right one. There are a few nice ones about from private sellers, with 20k or less miles.

I think his budget was 10 k mentioned above.
As an aside that red JCW is similar to the one I'm picking up this weekend. I paid a little more but have Nav/TV and a few other options on it.
That one is a Press car also, so those 2k miles may have been pretty hard!
Edited for bad spelling

Budget is £10-£12k. You can actually pick them up around the £8-9k mark now, but they tend to be lower spec and higher mileage.
She would love a JCW but I'd have serious issues with the £18k price tag!
We have a viewing lined up for Thursday evening; chili pack, lounge leather, LSD, auto lights/wipers etc and several other bits and pieces. It is private however and I do have some reservations about handing over £10k plus for something with no come back. On the plus side it's only done 22k, how much can be wrong with it? (lots probably lol)

Well we got one
Mid blue met with a black roof, lounge leather, anthracite headling and piano black trim. Toys wise it has auto-climate with heated front screen (nice to have this as it was something we were going to miss from the jag), auto lights and wipers, auto-dim mirror, visibility pack, and LSD (I really wanted this!
)
Pleased all in all, oh and it's only done 22k.

We're on cleaning it at the moment, wife did the inside yesterday while I did the outside of my MX5; today we'll swap over, and then have a run out in them both to get some decent pics somewhere
Apart from the obvious straightline advantage what else have you noticed about the JCW which differs from the standard MCS?
How different is the fuel consumption? Ours is averaging 36mpg at the moment which I think is excellent, especially as my MX5 would return 30mpg from similar driving.
I do think 45mpg on the combined cycle is a pipedream mind!
